  • Going Down With The Ship

    Going Down With The Ship

I've heard a lot of talk about how people loved Xanga. Past tense. They've mentioned the importance it has played in their lives and how much they'll miss it when it's gone. Gone? Gone where? Xanga is still here! In response to which I've had people tell me that Xanga is "like a sinking ship". (uh oh, here comes another analogy ) But what some people see as a sinking ship, I see transforming into a submarine. Xanga 2.0 will create the ability to navigate under water, not just on top of it.

In spite of the doomsday prophesies that proliferated in the initial days of the relaunch announcement, people are continuing to blog normally. And by normal, I simply mean, not every post is about Xanga potentially shutting down.

People are still posting tributes to those we've lost (@baldmike2004). They are still sharing stories about their random weekend (@aseriesoffortunateevents). And they continue to upload photos of nature and their adorable children (@Erika_Steele).

    Life on Xanga hasn't ended.

So even though you may think the site is going down. I'm here to tell you that this couldn't be further from the truth. And come July 15th, although the view may change, this vessel will sail on.

    Sail on, Xanga. Sail on...

  • I would like to request that in lieu of gifts for my birthday, which is July 13, donations be made to Save Xanga.

Otherwise, it'll be a sad year, indeed. It's my birthday wish.

  • xanga will never end,

Facebook will be a distant memory   and xanga will still be here

    Mark my words

  • If xanga needs  fund to keep operating  I would rather they came asking the members  than go advertising  for  more  Noobs to infest the site.

If Xanga was a  members  only  Club  it might be more attractive.

Think  Art museum,  no new members!!!  :)

No rules,  no copyright infringments,  no public access.  just a members only club.

  • @PrincessPowers - Even though I've already donated, I think I owe you a song... or a poem... or both. But I won't make you wait until your birthday.

  • I haven't forgotten. I am infinitely patient for the things that matter. It takes time for the vine to bear fruit. You can't rush it.

  • Even if Xanga 2 were to happen, it'd only have around 300 paying members. The community we have now will be gone.

  • @PrincessPowers - You will not be disappointed.

@coolmonkey - Those who make up the community may change, but the community itself will still exist.

  • Ayy ayy Captain!

  • Awwwww yeah! If you're the captain going down with the ship, can I be the little mermaid on the front? :)

  • I appreciate your optimism. I truly hope we can raise the money in time.

  • I <3 my Xanga! And, yay, I got a mention! :D

  • I love Xanga an I'm not leaving!

  • I hope Xanga is around forever. Then again, I'd probably get more work done if it weren't. LOL, bawwww, WORK CAN WAIT!!!

  • its good, except the pic should be of a submarine, ha ha ;)

  • I dunno, I donated what I could and I'll be here until they reach their goal (or don't).

  • WAH! I WANT A XANGA BOAT!!!

  • I hope you are right and Xanga conttinues to live on and help us. I've met some wonderful people on here the past 8 years

  • Awesome post! I'll stay on the ship to see what happens and wish Xanga the best!

  • But don't you think the community are the 'people'? If those who are here now leave... it won't be the same 'xanga'. I know, for now, I have to leave. I cannot pay to stay.... so when I speak of xanga's end... I speak of it's end for me. Because, again - for now, it's ending.

I fully support the changes. I'm a huge advocate for change, even at a cost. I think it's necessary. I'm sad that I can't jump on board the sailing ship... I don't think it's sinking though. At this time... I will have to just read the bloggers who stay that I love until I can regain a membership.

Big changes, big risks are worth it. I just hope those who loved and enjoyed the community still get to participate.

  • I believe we will get to $60,000 which so many said was impossible.

  • Even if Xanga reaches their goal, I can't afford $48/yr when we live paycheck to paycheck and are saddled with debt. Other things demand our money first. That's what makes me sad, that I will no longer be able to participate in a place where I have "lived" online for 10 years. Some of my best friends come from this site. I understand why people want people to be positive, but it still is the end of something great for some of us.

  • Amen to that brother!!!

  • @SasGal - On this ship, you can be whatever you want.

@Doubledb - Haha! I thought about doing that! But I didn't have time to go looking for a submarine to modify. lol

    @saintvi - I'll make you a boat, my dear.

@Nancybratt - Yeah, that's exactly the reason why I can't give up without a fight.

@xXrEMmUsXx - Well, what I mean is that community is still possible even if there are different people than the ones before who now make up the community. If people leave, Xanga won't be the same if the ones who left were people you were close to. But what I've found is that many of those relationships transcend Xanga and I will stay connected to those people in other ways. And with Xanga 2.0, there will be new people to discover and new thoughts and ideas to exchange. I really am hoping to be in a position where I can give people the gift of Xanga when the transfer happens. You are definitely on my list.

@apennieformythoughts - I completely understand. I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. But I do hope that I can help other people stay connected to Xanga. I'm working on a way to possibly start a sponsorship program to help people pay for Xanga 2.0.

  • I hope it survives.

That being said, the funny thing about a submarine is that it was designed to be something that no one knew was present. Couldn't see it, hear it, had no idea it was there

Yep. Perfect analogy of 2.0 :p

  • Ameen! I am with Xanga for all times... thick and thin.

  • @MyxlDove -  Yay!! I think this profile pic will work best. Or you can just hang me from the bow of your ship and I can be the figurehead. Haha! Either way works!

  • The old xanga is dead on July 15th! Dead! There is hope that a new xanga will rise from the ashes of the old xanga! I hope it does and have contributed to that! I want to see what it will be. I am surprised at the number of freeloaders that have been criticizing what they got for free, and vocally jumping ship. They will still have options to read and comment for free with their xanga accounts - and should they later decide to invest 13 cents a day - they can even blog - if the xanga phoenix rises!
