Personally, I like the first one better... it looks creepier, somehow. (And I'm assuming that you're not writing a romance novel... right?)

I like the first one better. The image better matches the font and title, Malaise. The only thing that catches uncomfortably for me is the line on the bottom. Is there a reason that is there? (Secondarily, the word "Annals" is a distraction, for me, and make me look twice, like, "did that just say "Anal?" Immature, perhaps. But I am a reader, and are you writing for yourself or for your audience?)

Another vote for the first one. Very atmospheric and more evocative of the title. I think I will sign up this year, too. :)

The first one looks more like something is or could be wrong, because yellow is the perceived color of sickness. The second one looks more like a tropical escape and I see no malaise.
