Lurker Tendencies

Someone called me on being a lurker on their blog the other day. It was true and I told them that I am planning to be more interactive with them.  But it got me thinking... this topic is prime for further discussion.

I admit that I like different bloggers for different reasons. Some people I like because their writing is witty and intelligent. Some people I like because they provide amazing photos as visual aid for the stories they tell. Others I like because I respect their opinions. While still there are others that are just a good way to waste time.

For all of these and more, my comments are wildly inconsistent. What I mean by that is simply there are people who are deeply intriguing which makes me want to interact with them more frequently than others. So I may comment and send a private message. Others, because of their abrasiveness or preference for controversy, are better admired from a distance. It doesn't mean that I don't like them, but I may not always agree with them.

So, I'll skim through their pulse history (Because really, Xanga doesn't seem to have figured out a good way to promote pulses yet. They don't even show up in search results.), or I'll run down a bunny trail of RECs, or I might just read their post that was featured and have a good laugh... without ever making my presence known aside from my footprints. Yeah, it's lurker-ish... but it's harmless. Plus, I'm sure with my ridiculous number of subs/friends (currently over 1,000), there's at least a few people doing the same thing with me and my blog.

So confess...

Are you a chronic lurker?

I'm more of a reader than a lurker. I read the blogs and pulses of those I'm subscribed to and friends with. My crime is that I'm not great about commenting. I don't always have the time or mental capacity to do more than just smile and appreciate the words.

But I'm kind of that way in real life, too. I'm a listener. I have things to say, don't be fooled. But that isn't all the time and on every subject. So when I don't comment, I came here and just *listened* to you.

Hmmm, 50% lurker? I TRY to leave a comment, but sometimes... I just can't think of something to say. sometimes, I don't have much time to read longer posts, so i'll skim and "come back later", even though I usually end up forgetting. I try not to be too silent, anymore! But,  yeah... I'm a lurker sometimes!  I used to be a lot worse!

At times. But I tend to leave a comment (most of the time). I just feel it'll be rude of me not to..

I don't see why it matters... I don't get upset if I see someone's footprint that didn't comment or comes and goes, or is even all through old posts. Possibly because I do the same thing? Even though I generally comment, I really force comments sometimes just because I don't want to be labeled a lurker. I read what I'm looking at. I just don't always have something to say or really feel like I want to 'connect'. They may intimidate me though I'm intrigued and I just don't know how to go about a comment.

I don't mind if people read but don't comment.  Maybe the reader didn't have anything to add to the conversation!  (Or nothing nice to say.)

Sometimes I will stumble upon a new blog that I really, really like. When this happens I am often tempted to go back and read older post, yet this whole "lurker" idea prevents me from doing so. It's a shame.

I have never understood why people complain about others "lurking" on their page. I think it is an arrogant perspective to have. I write because I WANT people to read my stuff. If they spend a long time on my blog it makes me happy. That is why it exist. So people can read it.

I think these people who pretend to be offended when someone looks over there page, need to get over themselves. Sure creepers are out there, but there are also people with innocent intentions and a genuine interest in writing.

I look at most things and if I have something to say by the end I will comment. If I don't have much thought on the subject then I don't. People won't like every post they see, sometimes there just isn't anything to say.

@sarahsmurfette - Well, comment or not, I definitely appreciate the listening.

@Megabyyte - No worries. I'm the same way. My intentions are always good. The execution just doesn't match up with my workload most days.

@Thatslifekid - lol Cuculope Cantalumber.

@Babieboo_Annie - I think some people do see it as rude. However, I am NOT one of those people.

@alterEGGO - @babybug329 - Well you know what they say, "If you can't say something nice...". I hope that doesn't mean that people who don't comment want to say mean things to me. lol

@xXrEMmUsXx - That's very interesting. What do you think it is about the person that intimidates you?

@amateurprose - I understand what you're saying. And I think it's true. But I also think there may be a difference if perhaps someone is trying to build a relationship of some sort. I guess they feel you owe it to them to comment? I don't know. Just a guess.

Lurking is better than rushing into a chatboard or blog and commenting recklessly so I don't mind lurkers.  As for being a lurker myself?  If I find good reason to comment I will otherwise you'll just see a rec or footprint.

I don't mind a lurker. Sometimes I'm a lurker myself.  At least a lurker is reading what I write and not ignoring me altogether. If that makes sense.

@MyxlDove - I hope people don't have unkind for me, as well...but if they did...often it is best they keep it to themselves.

If I like a post, I will keep going back to read the new comments. Also, every time you use your Subscriptions page (not Subs), it shows up as a Footprint. If I go to a new blog, I like to go through their blogs to get an idea of what their style is.

I like lurking.  Sounded so much less peeping tomish in my mind.  But I like people reading my blogs.  My s/o and I work hard on them and the reason it is public is so people will read them.  Doesn't matter to me if they comment or not, though I love hearing people's opinions.  I also like reading other people's writings.  Sometimes I have nothing to say, but I am awed by what I read.  So saying nothing does not mean not liking something. Sometimes it just leaves me speechless.

@MyxlDove - harsh opinions with no room for listening are intimidating... if I've come a few times and not responded its usually because I don;t think you want to learn from me as I want to learn from you. Did that make sense/?

How does one 'lurk' on a blog site? WTF? Isn't that what the very PURPOSE of the site is?

@CanuckFascist - Lurking is just a lighthearted way to describe those who read blogs but don't or rarely comment. And no, I don't think it's the primary purpose of the site. There are plenty of people who blog on Xanga in particular because of the real sense of community and connection that's promoted here. And that is what I think is the primary purpose of Xanga. Maybe it's different for blogger or WordPress. But that's my assessment having been here for over 10 years.
