People Watching

In support of my referentially unsubstantiated, but scientifically plausible belief that confession is the first step toward recovery, I'd like to say this:

My name is Riis, and I'm a People Watcher.
(sounds kind of dirty, doesn't it? )

Wait, wait, wait. It's not that I think People Watching is anything to be ashamed or cured of. It's just that maybe some things are perhaps not as socially acceptable to confess? Maybe? Perhaps? Now that I think of it, I wonder if more people are this way than are willing to admit here online. Hmm... whatever. I don't mind being the first.

At any given time while I'm driving (and of course, paying VERY close attention to the road), I will see people at intersections waiting to cross the street, a drove of teenagers walking to school... while texting, an older Hispanic man with a bicycle-cart carrying groceries or paint supplies or Vote Obama lawn signs (true story), or two young guys criss-crossing each other on skateboards heading toward the park.

What I find fascinating is that I'm starting to see design patterns in regard to people and how they look. You know, common physical traits that group people together in what could easily be labeled a body-fashion template. I can't tell you how many pale, young women of varying body sizes I've seen who all have dark, shoulder-length curly hair and seem to shop at the same clothing store. I've also come to believe that this one lanky, goth teen boy with glittery, dark purple hair who was crossing the parking lot of El Camino College just moments before I saw him eating a hot dog at the outside table of a Wienerschnitzel, can fly or teleport. It's the only explanation that works right now. :-/

Anyway, I think people watching is what drives some people to photo-stalking. Not that I'VE done that, but I can understand that curiosity often spurs peculiar behavior. Like having an increase of random people send me friend requests after posting fitness photos on some of my recent posts. o_O They're just people watching, right?

So... anybody else people watch?

@sarahsmurfette - lol It is MOSTLY harmless. We occasionally come across the socially awkward person who is FAR too forward and aggressive in their assessments of your physical attributes.

@trunthepaige - Don't I know it! Erm... I mean, you don't say?

@Thatslifekid - That actually sounds like fun! And makes it seem far less creeper-ish.

@mycontinuity - I bet there are TONS of different characters to see in New York. Extra points if you also chronicle your people watching with a camera.

@sarahsmurfette - Wait, when were you gushing? I should probably save the comment for days when I don't feel so WOW-able. lol

I am not much of a people watcher, but my husband, mother in law, and some of our kids are definitely people watchers. We'll be out eating, and I'll say something to Steven and he's staring off behind me, and he'll reply, "Did you hear what she just said?" and I"ll reply, no because I'm talking to YOU. ha.

I'm sort of the opposite of a people watcher. I say to people all the time, "If we get mugged I hope you're paying attention, because I can never remember the details!".

@aSeriesofFortunateEvents - haha... I admit that I have been guilty of that same thing on occasion.

@alterEGGO - Hey, that's a great idea! I'll have to try that with the kiddos soon.

I confess. I'm a people watcher too.  Yes, there are a lot of us. I can be walking at the park, then stop, sit on a bench and just watch who else goes by..an old couple holding hands, a fit young woman in an expensive looking sexy workout outfit, a bunch of college students playing frisbee golf, or a lone dog walker. It's all fun and nothing to be ashamed of, unless someone is following them to see where they go next or where they live..That's stalking.

When I pass someone in another vehicle, I always try to see what the person driving looks like. Don't know why or how I picked up this habit

Hm.. Actually, not particularly. I think I'm actually a bit more oblivious, or maybe just a tad self-centered, to notice the happenings on around me :/ But, and though when you spell out people-watching, it's a bit creepy (in my opinion), I'd love being observant enough that I'd be people-watching.

It just seems really interesting, is all. Like, seeing snippets of stories unfold.

"Well I'm just people watching, the other people watching me~ And we're all people watching, the other people watching we~" :>

@Crystalinne -  The first and most important rule is giveing humans some privacy

the humans is inquisitive by inherently but But respect for the privacy is a duty Sorry for my bad English ^^

@song69 - ah yes, privacy IS important, but Im not sure we are talking about breaching that, not THAT sort of people watching. It's ok to glance at and take mental note of what people who are out shopping, or walking in public are wearing or what they  generally look like and wonder what their lives perhaps might be like or what name seems to fit them. (it's done at the beach, or the mall all the time) The interest in other people is what makes rag magazines popular or those  online sites that talk about hollywood stars' lives. If Noone gave a darn what others looked like at all or what they wore, why are fashion and make up billion dollar industries?

I'm a people watcher, too.  My favorite spot is at the shopping mall.  I park myself on a bench and watch.  Lots of interesting people.
