  • I Believe

Most of us have heard that Xanga, my beloved blogging platform of more than a decade, is in danger of closing it's doors. According to John, they are now at a crossroads, as their lease is up soon on the networking facility where they've been hosting their servers. As the status quo is no longer possible, they've been working to figure out the best way for the Xanga community to move forward.

They are currently working to port Xanga to the open source blogging software WordPress, and reinvent the site together with the community. But doing so costs money. So they are launching a Kickstarter-style fundraising effort to help cover the following:

    * The costs of setting up new hardware at a new data center/hosting facility.
    * The costs of programmer/webmasters to get the site up and keep it running.
    * The costs of running the site day to day

Xanga has raised $14,900 with 64 people giving so far. That means the average gift was $232.00  They're offering a 5 year membership for $240.00. That means we would only need to get 187 people to give $240.00. That something we can definitely do. I would love if you could give more but getting 187 to give $240 is well within our reach! I'm seeking your help in making this a reality by contributing to the campaign. All you have to do is head on over to the crowdhoster site at the link below. Thanks!

  • Thanks for helping spread the word, Riis!!

  • I'm gonna have to say goodbye whether it's saved or not. I had to take out a loan to pay bills so I can't justify donating 5 bucks, let alone paying a membership fee.

  • To each their own and kudos to those willing to support a cause that they believe in. But...WordPress is already here and free. I've been here more than a decade as well and I've enjoyed many aspects of the community here, but for me, it's time to let go.

  • @filtered_sunlight@momaroo - Hey dear, I tried WP but I have found that it shows e-mail addresses and IP addresses to those that you reply too. I had two Xangans go there with me and when they replied to me I saw there info. I made a protected post and put a screen shot on there. I don't believe you are on my protected list, but if you'd like to see what I'm referring too, please, let me know and I'll add ya.

Riis, @xxMissforbiddenfruitxx and I are trying Tumblr. It's a learning experience, but every new site is. I see you have an account there (looking at the right side of your page). I even wrote down Formspring and Deviantart as possible sites. This searching for a new site is exhausting, as mentioned on my protected post above. I think I tried most of the ones you have listed since I doubt I would have found out about then any other way. I know most Xangans will be torn between following some friends to one site while others go to another site. I do hope Xanga can be spared but $240 would not be something J and I would feel to be beneficial at this time. I think I mentioned why to you already. I'll keep my site here in hopes they are able to recover. . . *fingers crossed*.

  • I do hope they can raise the money.

Hubs and I are still going to go ahead with making our own site because we think it has potential. But I am hoping to continue supporting Xanga too.

  • I can't afford $240, but I am going to pledge for a year if I ever remember to grab a credit card when I'm up. It's a no-brainer for me; if xanga survives, I will want to be part of it. If they don't raise the full amount needed, they won't charge anyone's credit cards. If they do, my year is paid for.

  • @olwd - I'm not particularly worried about that sort of thing. Maybe that's why WP seems to have less drama? I recently watched a crazy on Datingish illegally post as others and tell someone that they needed to kill themselves, without consequence. Yeeeesh. Also, if the Xanga powers that be are going to move xanga to the same platform as WP, "Xanga 2.0" will likely do the same thing, for better or worse. It's good to have the info though; thanks. I'm sort of torn between WP and Blogger, but I know I can't stay here.

  • @filtered_sunlight@momaroo - Wherever you end up I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Hopefully you have a few go with you. That is how it was when I came here from my last site. Well, only one real friend, another was too religious for me, but we had chatted some.

  • @olwd - Yeah, at least a dozen people have already made the jump and we've followed each other on WP. I even ended up reconnecting with a Xangan that had wondered off to WP a while ago and, in her moves, we'd all sorta drifted apart. It was really awesome catching up with her last night.

  • @filtered_sunlight@momaroo - That's wonderful, so glad you two were able to reconnect.
